Free Tag Project
FreeTag: Designing Legal Canvases for Urban Art Graffiti is often rushed and messy because artists are forced to work illegally to avoid being caught. The problem is not a lack of creativity, but the absence of permission, which turns potential art into hurried tagging. FreeTag introduces a visual authorization mark, a modified Madrid City Council logo, that signals a storefront shutter is legally available for graffiti. By making permission visible, artists can take their time to create high-quality, intentional work without the fear of legal consequences. In collaboration with the city, participating businesses use this stencil to transform vandalized storefronts into a network of professional urban canvases. This system effectively redirects illegal tagging into impactful art that enhances the community.
